Know Before You Go Updates: United States & Canadian Departures Testing Requirements – May 17, 2022

Disney Cruise Line updated multiple Know Before You Go pages for both United States and Canadian Departures on May 17th with updated health and safety protocols. Notable changes include updates to Disney Cruise Line’s COVID-19 testing requirements for all sailings departing from a U.S. or Canadian port on or after June 7.

Know Before You Go Updates 20220517

As a reminder, Disney Cruise Line requires all vaccine-eligible Guests (based on U.S. eligibility requirements) to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, as defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at the time of sailing. This is a requirement for all Guests (U.S. and international) ages 5 and up.

The following COVID-19 testing requirements will go into effect beginning June 7:

Guests who are not vaccine-eligible

Guests who are not vaccine-eligible because of age (ages 4 and under) must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test result (paid for by the Guest) taken no more than 3 days before their sail date. The test should be a Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT), rapid PCR test or lab-based PCR test. Rapid antigen tests are not accepted.

Guests who are not vaccine-eligible because of age are also required to take a second COVID-19 test (paid for by Disney Cruise Line and administered by Inspire Diagnostics) at the terminal before boarding.

Fully vaccinated guests

Fully vaccinated guests on sailings departing U.S. and Canadian ports must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test result (paid for by the Guest) taken no more than 2 days before their sail date. The test must be:

  • A rapid antigen test professionally observed by a medical professional through a medical facility or telehealth provider
  • Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT)
  • Rapid PCR test or lab-based PCR test

Guests can purchase COVID-19 tests through our third-party vendor, Inspire Diagnostics, or obtain a test from any independent testing supplier.

Test Results for all guests must be uploaded into the Safe Passage website by midnight prior to embarkation day.

Fully vaccinated Guests who do not upload the required pre-trip test results into the Safe Passage website by midnight prior to embarkation day must be tested at the terminal before boarding and will be charged. The cost of embarkation tests for fully vaccinated Guests will be $74 + tax for the initial antigen test, and, if needed, $125 + tax for a confirmatory PCR test, charged at the time of service.

Below are the pages the pages that were updated:

There are various emails being sent out based on sail dates:

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements

Disney Cruise Line requires all vaccine-eligible Guests (based on U.S. eligibility requirements) to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, as defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at the time of sailing. The CDC defines fully vaccinated as 14 days after receiving:

  • The second dose of an accepted 2-dose vaccine
  • The full series of an active (not placebo) COVID-19 vaccine in the U.S.-based AstraZeneca or Novavax COVID-19 vaccine trials
  • The second dose of any “mix and match” combination of accepted COVID-19 vaccines (administered at least 17 days apart)

In order to sail, all Guests (adults and children, regardless of age) must upload their proof of vaccination and negative COVID-19 test results on the Safe Passage website by Inspire Diagnostics no later than midnight prior to embarkation day. A parent or legal guardian will need to use their own account to provide this information on behalf of minors. Guests Recently Recovered from COVID-19

In some cases, people who have recently recovered from COVID-19 may still test positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. If Guests have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 within 11 to 90 days of their sail date, they may qualify to be considered as “90-Day-Recovered.” With the appropriate documentation and subsequent approval, Guests considered “90-Day-Recovered” are not required to participate in COVID-19 testing during the Pre-Sail, Embarkation or Debarkation phases of their voyage. For details on what documentation is required, please visit Before Leaving Home: Know Before You Go.

Debarkation Day COVID-19 Antigen Testing

All unvaccinated Guests on 5-night and longer sailings are required to take a COVID-19 antigen test (paid for by Disney Cruise Line) on the ship the day before debarking.

Face Coverings

Face coverings are not required for Guests outdoors while on board the ship and at designated locations on Castaway Cay. Face coverings will be optional in most indoor locations throughout the ship. Guests under 5 years of age who are currently ineligible to be vaccinated will be required to wear face coverings in Youth Activity spaces and in the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique; and, while not required, we continue to strongly recommend these guests wear a face covering in all other indoor locations. Face coverings are optional on motorcoach transportation and in the cruise terminal and may be required in ports of call based on local government requirements. Face coverings are required in all testing areas.

Requirements for Cruise Passengers Visiting Canada

The Canadian government’s requirements for cruise passengers visiting Canada are independent of Disney Cruise Line’s health and safety protocols. Guests should review and stay up to date with any requirements or restrictions that may be in place for travel to Canada. Visit the Government of Canada’s website for information.

ArriveCAN

Before sailing or entry into Canada, Guests must create a profile and upload required documentation to ArriveCAN, Canada’s entry requirements program. ArriveCAN is available via the web or as an app for iOS and Android. The mobile app is complimentary and is available in English, French and Spanish (displayed in the language of your device). Travelers can also submit their information by signing in online at Canada.ca/ArriveCAN. To be ready for your trip, create your free ArriveCAN account prior to travel.

Upload Documentation in Advance of Travel

Canada requires proof of full COVID-19 vaccination for travelers 12 years of age and older. Proof of vaccination and travel and citizenship documents can be saved in your ArriveCAN traveler profile before any planned travel. We recommend that you download the ArriveCAN app and create a profile prior to sailing. If you’re traveling with others, you can include multiple family members in your ArriveCAN submission. Although you can upload digital versions of your documentation prior to sailing, we recommend that you also have physical copies of these documents accessible while traveling.

Within 72 Hours of Arrival

To enter Canada you will need to complete an ArriveCAN entry within 72 hours prior to arrival by air or land border. You will receive a QR code receipt to present when entering the country. After arriving, you will be required to complete an additional, separate ArriveCAN submission to receive a cruise-specific QR code receipt to be presented during embarkation.

Creating a profile in ArriveCAN allows for personal data (name, DOB, travel document, vaccination certificate) to be retained thereby reducing the time required for subsequent submissions. Information required by ArriveCAN includes contact information and travel details.

Face Coverings

Per the Canadian government, all travelers, regardless of vaccination status, must wear face coverings while ashore in Canada, including in the cruise terminal, COVID-19 testing areas, airports and aircraft.

Disney Cruise Line announced at the beginning of April, they will be taking a phased approach with the relaxation and modifications of various health and safety protocols which were required upon the industry restart.

We will continue to monitor for additional changes, but please take the time to read and familiarize the information on Disney Cruise Line emails and Know Before You Go pages, specific to your upcoming sailing as this remains a dynamic situation.

I’ve taken two Disney cruises in the last 6 months. I didn’t mind the testing at the port. The part I don’t like here is that now we (the customer) have to pay for the testing that Disney has required. So, for my family this will now be an additional out of pocket expense of $74+tax at the port (roughly $240) and perhaps more if I do it at home.

I can see where Disney is tired of having people arrive who get tested and come up positive and then they can’t sail at the last minute, but to push the cost off on the customer at this point seems a bit over the top. Disney clearly needs a new president at the helm of the ship!

Walgreens offers free Rapid Antigen and NAAT testing! That’s what I’m planning to do for my upcoming cruise to avoid paying at the port.

I could not agree more. We are going on an already (very) expensive trip in June on the Fantasy, and now we will have an additional $300 to shell out. Maybe everyone going on a Disney cruise is insanely rich so this doesn’t matter, but it certainly strikes me as a money grab. I have no issue with the testing requirement, but this is yet another example of Disney up charging the customer.

Kevin B, I fully agree with your comment. We sailed last month on the Disney Wonder and it was roughly at half capacity – really quite empty. DCL fares are really already expensive when compared to other cruise lines, So down loading more costs onto DCL’s guests will not help fill their ships, and with more guest capacity arriving with the Wish, DCL may have real trouble filling any of their ships! Time for a new CEO at Disney’s helm for sure.

I think DCL is trying to get everyone to test before they get to port to take the burden/liability off of them. I don’t think it’s a money grab. they are pricing it high so folks will opt for a less expensive option away from port.

I agree. At what point is Bob going to realize he has tarnished Walt’s Dream. It is well known that Walt Disney wanted “everyone” to have a magical time at Disney. Unfortunately, recently Disney is more concerned with their shareholders and political views.
Further note, i am fully vaccinated and boosted. So this policy isn’t about testing and vaccines. It’s really about additional cost to the customer.

So if you have a land/sea vacation package and are staying at the Wilderness Lodge prior to cruise how do you get tested? Where do you go to get pre-tested and how do you get the results before boarding.

There were multiple emails with different date ranges. There is a section in the post before each email that summarizes the dates:

      • June 7 – July 8, 2022 – Disney Dream or Disney Fantasy sailings from United States
      • July 9 – September 30, 2022 – Disney Wish, Disney Dream, or Disney Fantasy sailings from United States
      • June 13 – September 19, 2022 – Disney Wonder Sailings from Vancouver

It seems like the Know Before you Go page and Emails sent out contradict each other about how you can test and what type of tests you can get.

We cruise on July 9th but are in Disney World before hand, so if the DCLs website is correct that worries us about getting our tests in time to take to Disney World. If the email is correct then we could always go to a nearby walgreens around Disney and test there.

Just confusing about the wording from the Email to DCL website

Well I think this is a step in the right direction. Think of all the people who travel either by car or plane just to find out at the very last minute they’re denied boarding. This way you have piece of mind as you’re leaving your home that you will be able to board, assuming you’re vaccinated and negative. Pushing the cost off to the consumer does stink though. The other good news is that your pretest can be an antigen test (with caveats) so less likely to get false positive in absence of active infection. This should mean a quicker arrival and boarding process for most. Not for me however due to having a 2 & 4 yo kids on our July Wish trip

So does this mean no testing at the port if you tested 1-3 days before sailing? I don’t think that has changed but its not very clear either if both still need to happen.

I don’t know how much turning away las minute positives is really an issue. We sailed the Fantasy on April 30th and only saw one group pulled out for further testing (and I believe) eventual rejection.

The issue I have is the 2 day window to get tests, get results and get them uploaded. Our last trip, 2 days before the cruise found us on a flight first thing in the morning, then staying at the Orlando airport. What about families who visit the parks before going on a cruise? They have interrupt their (already expensive) park time to deal with testing requirements? Just keep testing everyone at the port and be done with it!

You can purchase Covid tests that include a telehealth visit for less than what Disney is charging. We will be doing that since we will already be in the parks during the two day pre-cruise window for our upcoming Wish cruise. Wow, the wonders of modern medicine and technology. Somebody gets paid to watch people stick a q-tip up their nose.

Are the at home test rapid antigen Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) as I can’t definitively find any information on what test are NAAT? I like the idea of testing at home but I don’t want to pay double if the COVID test we complete isn’t approved by Disney or safe passage.

This is what every other cruise line does. Disney was the only one I knew of that was doing “free” (included with fare) testing at embarkation.
