Disney Visa $50 Onboard Credit Extended Through 2015 & Limited to Beverage Purchases Only

This week, Disney Rewards extended their $50 Onboard credit offer for Chase Disney Premier and Disney Reward Visa card holders for sailings through the end of 2015. In doing so, they also updated the fine print. The terms now state that onboard credit is only good towards to purchases of beverages. The following is a copy of the footnote from DisneyRewards.com.

4. Must use your valid Disney Visa Card to book a Disney Cruise Line vacation for sailings through 12/30/2015 to receive a $50 onboard credit good towards beverages. Call 1-800-257-2024 or your travel agent to book a Disney Cruise Line vacation and ask for booking code DCC. Offer must be requested at time of booking for new bookings only. The onboard credit is per stateroom for each stateroom paid in full with your Disney Visa Card. Offer is valid for up to two staterooms. Any unused portions are non-refundable and non-transferable. Cannot be combined with any other offers or discounts and is for personal use only. Offer subject to change or cancellation without notice. Ships’ Registry: The Bahamas. Chase is not responsible or liable for fulfillment of this offer.

As recently as September 5, 2015, the terms allowed for guests to use the onboard credit towards merchandise, spa treatments, shore excursions (port adventures) and other onboard activities. The following is a copy of the previous fine print from early September.

For those not familiar with this perk, if you book a Disney Cruise with booking code DCC and use your Disney Visa to pay for your vacation in full you will receive $50 to use in the form of onboard credit. As charter cardholders we have taken advantage of this perk for as long as I can remember. In fact, since upgrading our card to the Disney Premier Visa this credit has offset the cost of the annual $49 fee.

Disney Visa Vacation Perks Septemebr 2014

I called Disney Visa Rewards to inquire about this policy change and it appears this change was snuck in as the customer service agent did not have any updated documentation and was unaware of the change on the website. She was very helpful and double check her internal sources and supervisors before contacting DCL to get a resolution. She was informed that even though we have upcoming cruises that were paid in full prior to this policy change, our Disney Visa $50 onboard credit for each cruise is now limited to beverage purchases only. However, I have heard other reports that this only applies to reservations paid in full after December 31, 2014 and another version of the story that the new policy would be in effect for any new bookings since the policy was changed.

If you happen to inquire, please take a minute to share in the comments. Maybe we can get a consensus on how this policy change will be handled for current bookings.

UPDATE: Clarity from DCL on the Disney Visa Onboard Credit

The effective date of this change appears to be 1/1/2015 for new bookings. That being said, any current reservations for 2014 or 2015 with the DCC code applied before December 31st will fall under the prior terms and the onboard credit will be good for all onboard purchases. For new bookings starting January 1st the onboard credit will be limited to beverage purchases only.

It’ll be interesting to note how it would be handled in their billing system. AFAIK today there are no restrictions on OBC and they simply show as a credit in your folio.

Looks like I will be changing my deposit to my other rewards credit card and canceling the Disney Visa now that the OBC is worthless to us since we don’t drink alcohol.
