Newcastle, England Port Summary
Newcastle upon Tyne is the jewel of Northern England, located on the eastern coast of the British mainland.
The city is constructed around a sizeable harbor, the foundation of its maritime legacy. Gorgeous beaches are mere miles away from Newcastle, and the pleasant year-round climate supports a lively beach culture. The local “Geordies” are friendly and like to socialise—though visitors may have difficulty understanding their thick accent.
Though commonly known as simply Newcastle, the city of Newcastle upon Tyne dates back to the days of the Roman occupation of what is now Britain. Its port was established in the 16th century and became an essential piece of the city’s prosperity, leading to a small armada of commercial shipyards along the river.
When Newcastle’s historic coal and shipyard industries died out in the 20th century, this resilient city bounced back with a strengthened public sector and what’s often cited as the world’s first department store, Bainbridge's (current site of John Lewis Newcastle). Now the city’s many shopping strongholds draw in pilgrims from all across the world to experience Newcastle’s retail utopia.
