14-Night Panama Canal Cruise from Miami, Florida

Embarking from Miami, Florida on Sunday, May 1, 2016

Captain: Gustaaf Verhulst
Cruise Director: Peter Hofer

PASSENGER REPORT: This was an interesting cruise with the delay in boarding due to the norovirus outbreak on the prior sailing. Rooms had been stripped of all amenities and guests were not permitted to self-serve on buffets for the majority of the first week. On boarding, approximately of 40 suitcases went into the ocean instead of the ship, one of which contained a medication for guest that was not on the ship. Obtaining that medication on shore set departure back to about 8:30 p.m. on 5/1. I spoke to three guests whose family’s suitcases went into the ocean. All said that the crew was doing their best to was and/or dry clean the contents. I was told that the longshoremen were involved in the suitcase dunking as the Wonder crew was on board the ship to receive them. While going through the Panama Canal, the reception center that sits on the canal was packed with Panamanians cheering “Mickey! Mickey!” and cries of “We love you Mickey”. It made me cry as I realized most if not all of those children will only ever see Mickey when the ship passes through as their financial situations will not get them to Disneyland or WDW. We had an emergency medical evacuation which required the ship after the transit through the canal requiring us to turn around and go two hours backwards to Acapulco to deliver the guest to a medical evacuation boat. We were advised that he or she made it to the hospital in Acapulco and was stable. This caused changes in time and even cancellations for some of the port excursions in Puerto Vallarta. As the Captain said on the last night, it was a very interesting cruise!
Made a stop in Acapulco on May 11th for a medical emergency.
