We met on the ship & walked out on to the pier in Cozumel. We boarded a water taxi & took a leisurely 15 min ride from the ship to Sand Dollar Sports. There we received an approximately 20 minute educational presentation on the life cycle of coral & its role in the environment. The marine scientist was very personable & we got to observe the coral growing in tanks before being transplanted to the sea. We then observed the tide pools along the shore & planted mangrove seeds. This area is rocky & while we managed in our pool slides, I wish I had worn water shoes. After that we rented a locker at the facility for $3 & stored our bag before going out to snorkel for approximately 45 minutes. The snorkeling was nice. There were many colorful fish & we saw a lot of the coral that this organization is working to restore. The excursion was just 3 families and ranged from experienced snorkelers like myself to a family that had never snorkeled before & had a child that I believe had special needs. The guides were extremely helpful & used a buoy to slowly guide those who were not comfortable. There was a photographer that took our pic underwater & the photos were reasonably priced. We then showered off using the outdoor showers & changed in bathroom. After 20-30 minutes, the water taxi returned to take us back to the ship-another slow, pleasant ride. We loved this excursion & if you enjoy learning about the ocean I highly recommend it. | ||
