Book Review: The Unofficial Guide to Disney Cruise Line 2017

A new year is upon us and so is the Unofficial Guide to Disney Cruise Line 2017 which hit the book store shelves in December. The 2017 edition features returning authors Len Testa, Erin Foster, Laurel Stewart and Ritchey Halphen who have updated and expanded the book by over 40 pages and a new chapter.

I’ve said the following in each of my prior reviews of the book, but I continue to think it is important to point out that the Unofficial Guide is not a brochure for Disney Cruise Line. It is not a marketing tool created by the PR department. The guide is set up as an objective planning guide based on the authors’ personal cruise experience as fare paying guests.

Rather than going over the entire book I’ll focus on a few of the thing that are new and really caught my attention.

I loved the section with the comparison between Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean which takes a look at various aspects of the cruise experiences and award a winner, if you will, in each category. This section has been expanded with some insight from Disney fan and blogger of the seas, Matt Hochberg from RoyalCaribbeanBlog.com. Matt lays out some of the differences as well as the similarities between the lines.

I will not speak for anyone else, but when it comes to cruising, I love the competition in the market. It keeps the cruise lines looking for ways to innovate and deliver a better overall onboard experience.

The 2017 Unofficial Guide to DCL major expansion is a dedicated chapter to Adventures by Disney’s river cruises offered aboard AmaWaterways’ AmaViola and AmaKristina. The chapter does a great job at comparing the apples and oranges that are DCL cruises and AbD River Cruises. Most importantly, the chapter provides things to consider as well as insight on what it may be like sailing as a family with children on a vacation stereotypically filled with retirees.

I think my favorite addition to the 2017 Unofficial Guide is the Scott Says practical tips blurbs throughout the book. I am not sure who this Scott guy is, but I imagine we’d get along really well.

The Unofficial Guide to Disney Cruise Line continues to grow from the first edition. The guide offers everything you may have been looking for on this this website but have not, in addition to updated content for veteran cruisers.

The Unofficial Guide to Disney Cruise Line 2017 is available now at your local book store as well the usual online retailers such as Amazon.com.
