Star Wars Day At Sea Returns on Early 2017 Disney Fantasy Caribbean Cruises

Disney Cruise Line announced the return of Star Wars Day at Sea in 2017 aboard the Disney Fantasy. Along with the 7-Night Western Caribbean cruise, the day-long Star Wars celebration will now be included on the 7-Night Eastern Caribbean sailings. Additionally, the Western Caribbean itinerary will include another port of call, Falmouth, Jamaica. During the 2016 sailings, Falmouth was replaced with an additional day at sea. In 2017, the number of sailings will more than double with a total of 15 Star Wars Day at Sea sailings on the Disney Fantasy.

“Our guests keep telling us that Star Wars Day at Sea is an experience they’ll never forget, that it’s a thrill of intergalactic proportions,” said Karl L. Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line. “In response to guest demand, we’re pleased to create even more Star Wars memories aboard the Disney Fantasy in 2017 with an expanded schedule of these special sailings. Clearly, the Force is alive and well on the high seas!”

Are you going to book one of these Star Wars Day at Sea cruises? For those who experienced the 2016 version, do you echo Holz’s statement? Will you book again?

Holz clearly did not read our comment card. So much could have been improved. I hope they add some normal Disney characters for the non Star Wars fans on Star Wars day since it is every week. However, they have made little to no changes since the first cruise.

Basically, I can’t stand ‘Frozen,’ but that wouldn’t stop me from enjoying the rest of the trip if a ‘Frozen’ day was held. I think you have plenty of opportunity to see the ‘regular’ Disney characters on other days, right? There is going to be a new Star Wars film every year for the next five years, so get ready!

This year if you wanted to do a 7 nights nights on a dream class ship you could pick with or with out Star Wars day. Next year you won’t have a choice. I love Star Wars but not everyone does. There were many things that could have been improved. When they show Episode 7 there is little else going on. The Atrium was the emptiest I had ever seen it. That would have been an ideal time for Mickey and company to meet. We did not see it again on the ship because we had already seen it multiple times. That is a time they normally have lots of character meets going on. We actually felt less was offered on Star Wars day then a normal sea day.

After reading the initial reviews of the Star Wars Day at Sea, I had serious misgivings about my February 20-27 cruise. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the characters available for photo ops were not only interested in interacting with guests dressed in costume, at times they went out of their way to do so. We also wound up with not one but two meet and greet opportunities and that seemed to be the rule, not the exception. I would consider booking again, but probably not for 2017.

I’m not sure how I feel about this. We are already booked on the Feb 4 cruise. Based on the comments from this years Star War Day at Sea, I hope it will be an improved experience. I would be just fine without it. At sea days are my favorite so I really hope that the Star Wars experience doesn’t take away from my relaxing day at sea. If anything, this will probably now make my cruise more crowded as it is likely to sell out. I’m sure my 2 sons will be excited though.

On the 2016 sailings, there was still a pirate night, but the fireworks were limited to the Star Wars Day at Sea. Additionally, the pirate night menu was not offered to make room for the Star Wars menu. There are links to the navigators for these sailings available here.

I am so conflicted now about our March 2017 booking. We aren’t fans of Star Wars. This will be our 5th time on DCL but first on Famtasy.

As I said above, I can’t stand ‘Frozen,’ but that wouldn’t stop me from enjoying the rest of any cruise that has a Frozen day. It’s just one day.

We just went on the Star Wars cruise that began March 19th. We booked before the cruise was announced as a Star Wars cruise, and while I don’t dislike Star Wars, I am also not a huge fan, so the theme wasn’t the draw for me. I thought the day was fun, even though they didn’t have the one advertised thing to which I was most looking forward…a bar turned into the Cantina (note: they did play the Cantina music in the halls of Europa). While it is just one day COMPLETELY dedicated to Star Wars, the Star Wars theme affects other aspects of the entire cruise that some people might not appreciate. Before the Star Wars day, one to two Episodes are shown in the Buena Vista theater every day so that guests can see all the movies leading up to the Force Awakens on Star Wars day. My 15-year-old loved this, because she hadn’t seen them and made it her goal to do so. However, it resulted in less space for other movies, which isn’t ideal for people who don’t want to watch the Star Wars films. For example, I would have liked to see Inside Out but it was only shown at two or three times when we were in ports. Other movies were shown only once. Also, Star Wars merchandise takes up a fairly significant amount of retail space. The items for sale are pretty cool, but at least some of them are available in the parks and, again, is an issue if you don’t really want anything Star Wars.

I was on the inaugural SWDAS cruise. Mr. Holz is correct about one thing: It is an experience I’ll never forget.

I’ll never forget paying a premium for an utterly lackluster experience.
I’ll never forget how DCL failed to deliver advertised features.
I’ll never forget DCL’s remorseless response to the many, many guest complaints.

Will I book again? Not a chance.
