Disney Cruise Line’s Toy Story – The Musical Aboard the Disney Wonder Closing in 2016 [UPDATED]

Disney Cruise Line’s latest audition notices point to the end of Toy Story – The Musical aboard the Disney Wonder in 2016. The current notice posted states “be part of Disney Cruise Line history in the closing company of Toy Story – The Musical.”

DCL Audition Notice Toy Story Closing November 2015

The closing date for Toy Story – The Musical is not exactly known at this time. However, the aforementioned casting call states the contracts will start February 2016 and run up to nine months. This leads me to speculate the closing of Toy Story – The Musical will come around the time of her fall dry dock to allow for a new show to be installed in the Walt Disney Theatre.

A replacement for Toy Story – The Musical aboard the Disney Wonder is unknown. Tangled: The Musical just started aboard the Disney Magic, but it was mentioned during the Disney Parks Blog meet up that the idea was to not repeat shows on the ships, but who knows what will happen. The other shows currently on the Disney Wonder are The Golden Mickey’s and Disney Dreams – An Enchanted Classic.

So what could replace Toy Story: The Musical on the Disney Wonder? I have one plausible scenario. First, some background. Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular from Disney’s California Adventure was reconfigured for the launch of the Disney Fantasy. In summer 2016, an all new Frozen: The Musical (unofficial name) will replace Disney’s Aladdin – The Musical in the Hyperion Theater in California…  This new Broadway-caliber, theatrical production based on the feature film Frozen will be directed by world-renowned and award-winning director Lisel Tommmy. Can you see where this is going… I think there is a strong possibility that Disney could fill two theaters with very similar productions of Frozen: The Musical in the Walt Disney Theatre on the Disney Wonder and Hyperion Theater at Disney’s California Adventure. Sure I could be wrong, but it has been fun speculating.

At the time of publication, the last bookable sailing for the Disney Wonder before her 2016 dry dock is the 14-Night Panama Canal Cruise from San Diego to Port Canaveral beginning August 26, 2016.

I sent an email to Disney Cruise Line to see if they would provide any additional details on the closing.  I specifically asked which Disney Wonder sailing will feature the closing night for Toy Story – The Musical for anyone looking to book that cruise or to book a sailing to see he show one last time before the curtain falls one last time. Finally, I asked if they could share when they might announce a replacement and if it will be a new production or being over a show from another ship.

It is after 10 PM on the East Coast so if we are fortunate enough to get a reply on Wednesday, I will update this article accordingly.

UPDATE: December 9, 2015 – Email Response from DCL

It took 2 weeks, but we received the following reply from Disney Cruise Line.

Thank you for your email.  At this time, the only announcement regarding 2016 entertainment is plans for our new Star Wars Day at Sea sailings.

Since they did not want to discuss Toy Story: The Musical I took the opportunity to inquire to learn if Star Wars The Force Awakens will PremEAR at sea on 12/18/2015 and screen during the Star Wars Day as Sea sailings…
